Komodos is a Brooklyn band whose sound blends post-punk and garage rock with shades of Fontaines D.C., Radiohead, and Interpol. We started jamming in 2020 because we had nothing else to do. When the pandemic hit, Taran (vocals, guitar) moved next door to his twin Kabir (drums) and his friend Hunter (guitar). They were finishing college in Boston and living in a tumbledown mansion on Mission Hill. We set up a drum kit in this big bedroom with stained-glass windows and threw parties, playing until everyone had either left or passed out. In 2021 we moved to Brooklyn to seriously pursue the band, and found Ben (bass) on Craigslist. He came over to our apartment to audition, and within 5 minutes it was clear he was the one. Turns out Taran knew his brother from school. Sometimes things just connect.
Since then, we've played over 100 shows, selling out venues across NYC including Baby's All Right, Mercury Lounge, Nightclub 101, Union Pool, and Gold Sounds. This summer we toured the UK, playing in London and Newcastle, and headlined the Slumberland Festival in upstate New York. We write our songs in a tiny room in an old brewery in East Williamsburg. There's no hierarchy, no single voice. Someone brings an idea, we tear it apart and rebuild it until it breathes right. Our lyrics come from a literary place but stay grounded in real stories —— poetry that doesn't hide behind itself.
Our new demos ("Seventeen," "Untitled," and "Monkey 47") were recorded by Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Iggy Pop, Swans) at BC Studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. He understands what we're after: something raw enough to draw blood but melodic enough to stick. We're already at work on the rest of the EP and are looking to partner with the right people to take that next step.
Thanks for listening.
